🏛️ Smithtown Cemetery – Patriot Burial Marker
A William G. Pomeroy Foundation historical marker was installed in 2022 at the intersection of North Country Road (NY-25A) and Judges Lane in Smithtown. It commemorates Revolutionary War patriot Zephaniah Platt, who is buried in Smithtown Cemetery
The inscription reads:
“PATRIOT BURIALS – SMITHTOWN CEMETERY – REVOLUTIONARY WAR PATRIOT ZEPHANIAH PLATT BURIED HERE. IMPRISONED FOR HIDING REBELThe marker notes that Platt was imprisoned after hiding rebel whaleboats in his barn. He was taken to a prison ship in New York Harbor, contracted smallpox, and died shortly after on January 27, 1778, at age 74
A dedication ceremony took place on May 24, 2022, with participation from the Long Island Sons of the American Revolution and local historical groups

Smithtown Cemetery is located on North Country Road (Route 25A), near Judges Lane. It’s maintained by the Smithtown Cemetery Association, which oversees burials and upkeep
The cemetery holds over 2,200 memorials, but only Platt has been specifically recognized with a Patriot marker
