Skidmore House

🏠 1. Bryant Skidmore House (529 Main Street) – Northport’s Oldest House

  • Built in 1761 by Bryant Skidmore, this modest farmhouse is located near Great Harbor and Red Hook. A 1977 marker erected by the Huntington Bicentennial Commission recognizes it as the oldest house in Northport

  • The marker reads:

“Skidmore House … Oldest house in village of Northport. Built by Bryant Skidmore in 1761 near Great Harbor and Red Hook.”

  • Often referred to as the Bryant Skidmore House, it stands at 529 Main Street and is acknowledged as a foundational part of Northport’s colonial history

🏡 2. Federal‑Style Skidmore House (199 Main Street) – mid‑1800s

  • A separate Skidmore residence at 199 Main Street was built between approximately 1838 and 1857 by Captain Joel Skidmore (1799–1865) or his son Eliphalet

  • The two-story, five-bay, Federal-style house featured interior chimneys and a covered porch—typical of the era

  • In 1984, amid possible demolition for parking, the building was purchased by Mara Brothers, restored, enlarged by about 15 feet, and repurposed into offices. The front yard was later sold to the Village for parking

  • After changing hands—and serving as law offices—it was donated to the Northport Historical Society in 2020 for preservation and inclusion in a historic campus alongside their museum
